Dental Implants

While the loss of one, or even several, teeth generally isn’t an insurmountable handicap, it can and does make people with gaps in their smiles more hesitant about displaying them. The go-to corrective procedure used to be a bridge, which meant a destructive procedure where multiple teeth had to be taken out and replaced with a bridge. While this was a solution of sorts, it meant unnecessarily removing healthy teeth in order to correct a relatively small gap. The new solution, and the one many patients with this sort of problem consider, is single or multiple dental implants.

Dental implants are synthetic teeth that are anchored into your jaw in a similar manner to your natural teeth. During a surgical procedure, Dr. De Andrade implants a post into the bone of the jaw to serve as the “root” of the prosthetic tooth. Once the bone heals around the post, integrating it into the structure of the mouth, the second phase can proceed. This consists of attaching another post to the root post and capping it with the synthetic tooth. The result is a smile that looks perfectly natural, without the discomfort and social stigma associated with missing teeth.

In extreme cases, a full-mouth restoration may be required. This is usually a last resort for people with advanced periodontal disease. It is mentioned here because multiple implants are often a viable alternative to dentures in such situations.

An important side note is that dental implants may not be an option for people with weak or insufficient bone in their jaw. However, bone augmentation, where a bit of bone is implanted into the jaw to prepare it to accept the root post and later the implant, is generally a sound corrective option for this type of problem. Only a comprehensive oral examination and radiographic examination can determine if you are a candidate for dental implants with or without the additional step of bone augmentation, but either way the results are sure to make you smile!
